Getting the size right is the difference between a harness your dog accepts and one that ends up in a drawer. Three measurements, five minutes.
How to Measure
Weigh your dog
Stand on a bathroom scale holding your dog, then subtract your own weight. This gives you the starting size — but weight alone isn’t enough for a good fit.
Measure the girth
Wrap a soft tape around the deepest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. For harnesses, also measure around the belly about 2 inches in front of the hind legs. This is the measurement that matters most.
Measure the back length
From the base of the neck (where the collar sits) to the base of the tail. Essential for long-bodied breeds — a Dachshund and a Beagle can weigh the same and need completely different sizes.

Between sizes?
Size up. A slightly loose harness is safer and far more comfortable than a snug one — and it gives you room for a fleece layer in winter.

Special Body Types — Read Before Ordering
Long-bodied breeds (Dachshund, Corgi, Basset Hound): Size up by one. Standard sizing assumes a compact frame, and on a long, low dog the belly strap sits too far forward — material bunches under the belly and the harness loses its lifting leverage. Measure back length as well as girth.
Deep-chested breeds (Greyhound, Whippet, Doberman): These dogs have a very large chest-to-waist ratio. The chest measurement will suggest one size and the belly another. Go by the belly measurement, and check that the chest strap isn’t pressing on the sternum.
Brachycephalic breeds (Pug, French Bulldog, Boxer): Avoid any strap that crosses near the throat. Choose harnesses that route around the chest, and never use a neck-attached support device — these breeds already have compromised airways.
Dogs with recent surgery or IVDD: Talk to your vet before fitting any support gear. Post-operative dogs often have specific restrictions on where pressure can be applied.
